The spectacular beauty of the abandoned churches in Italy

Well, even in Italy, there are some abandoned churches. Especially in Italy, probably. It is more likely to find them here than elsewhere – it is estimated that there are about 65,000 Catholic churches on our peninsula.

Many of these have been abandoned for one or more reasons or have ended up in irrecoverable and endless degradation. Dutch photographer Roman Robroek wanted to know more, so he travelled the length and breadth of Italy to photograph as many as a hundred. Here are some previews.
