Swiss artist and art curator Klaus Littmann recently planted 300 trees in the Wörthersee Stadion in Klagenfurt, Austria, as a “monument and memorial” for the environment in the Anthropocene era.
Where soccer matches 11 against 11 used to take place, a dense forest now stands.
The title of the work is For Forest, and it is a replica of a European forest in which visitors can enjoy the spectacle of the changing nature transplanted to an unconventional place.
The installation is Littmann’s transposition of a dystopian vision by the artist Max Peintner, who imagined a world in which trees would have existed only as rare specimens of animals to be admired in a zoo.
