Under bridges, one often expects to find forgotten places, but the skatepark in Ljubljana defies these expectations, offering an innovative and welcoming space.
This location indeed represents a happy exception to this unwritten rule. Designed by Scapelab studio, this skatepark stands out for its ability to transform a potentially unused area into a place of community, sports, and culture.
The project was born from the idea of utilizing an empty space under the southern end of an urban bridge by transforming it into a mini-ramp for skateboarding. The collaboration between designers, professional skaters, and a specialized consultant allowed the creation of ramps with curves and dimensions calibrated to offer the best skating experience possible.
Additionally, the mini-ramp is segmented to present various heights, slopes, and configurations, thus meeting the needs of all users, from beginners to experts.
Besides the ramp, the space is equipped with a flat area designed for soft skateboarding, enriched with boxes and rails.
This configuration ensures not only optimal use of the space by skaters but also the safety of pedestrians, who can cross the skatepark to reach the upper level of the bridge.
The Ljubljana skatepark demonstrates how sound and proper planning, combined with collective participation from the community and sector experts, can effectively transform or regenerate undervalued spaces into vibrant and functional places, promoting a healthy dose of social interaction. A brilliant example of how, sometimes, under bridges, one can discover true urban gems.
