The MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology) in Lisbon is one of the most recent works by architect Amanda Levete and her studio AL_A. Completed in 2016, the MAAT is located along the riverside of the Portuguese capital, in an area undergoing significant urban redevelopment.
The design of the MAAT is a clear expression of Levete’s contemporary architectural language, characterized by fluid forms and strong integration with the natural and urban context. The undulating structure of the museum, clad in three-dimensional ceramic tiles, reflects the light from the Tagus River, creating a play of reflections that changes with weather conditions and the angle of the sun. This choice of materials and forms contributes to an ongoing dialogue between the building and its environment, emphasizing the connection between the city and the water.
The interior design of the museum features an open and fluid plan, with exhibition spaces that flow seamlessly into one another. This configuration encourages an immersive experience for visitors, who can explore the exhibitions in a continuous path.
The MAAT is not just a museum but also a cultural landmark for the city of Lisbon. It hosts events, conferences, and educational activities, becoming a hub of innovation and cultural exchange.
